Freedom

“What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill the farmers and give the vineyard to others.”

Mark 12:9

Don’t mistake the freedom we have in Christ, freedom from the law and sin, as freedom to do whatever you want. Jesus was talking about the reigning Jewish authorities here. Their job was to show people the way and be a light to the nations, it did not work out that way. In stead of doing the job the Lord had given them to do, they killed the Son. What would God do to them? Read the history of Jerusalem in AD70, or just read the next chapter of Mark. Our freedom is not a discarding of our responsibility to follow the Lord. Do His will.

Arguing

And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Mark 11:33

Just because you know the truth doesn’t mean it’s worth your time to tell someone. Any time someone is willing to listen, we should be ready to tell the truth… but if they disagree and won’t listen, which is sadly the case about 99% of the time on social media, don’t feel obligated to waste your time, Jesus didn’t. It’s sad, but we know the majority of people will reject the truth, it’s the “narrow path” we are on (I hope you are). Focus your time on those who want to listen, and make yourself available for others like them.

Critical Race Theory (Just Thinking Podcast)

I know y’all have questions, because you continue to ask. So, if you’re not tired of hearing about it yet and want to learn more…

Here are Virgil Walker and Darrell B. Harrison talking on a 3 1/2 hour (!) podcast (Episode #108) from the Just Thinking Podcast, from a Christian perspective.

The actual topical discussion starts at about the 17 minute mark

Critical Race Theory, or CRT for short, is, for many professing evangelicals today, a philosophy that is steeped in confusion and ambiguity. That is by design. In this expanded episode of the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell Harrison and Virgil “Omaha” Walker spend more than three hours unpacking the origins, tenets, and threats that Critical Race Theory poses not only to the evangelical church, but to society as a whole.

You may wish to bookmark this, there are a lot of quotations from sources in this one.

Divorce

Some Pharisees came to test him, asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

He replied to them, “What did Moses command you?”

They said, “Moses permitted us to write divorce papers and send her away.”

But Jesus told them, “He wrote this command for you because of the hardness of your hearts. But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

When they were in the house again, the disciples questioned him about this matter. He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. Also, if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Mark 10:2-12

“Oh, it’s what’s best for us” well, not according to Jesus, I guess you know better than he does. Divorce is killing the “new person” that the union of your flesh created. Sometimes it’s unavoidable, the other person divorces you. Perhaps you have to divorce to protect yourself or your kids, it’s unavoidable, but it’s not good. The Bible never condones divorce, in any circumstance. What are “Biblical grounds” for divorce? None. It’s allowed if your heart is so hard you’re going to do it anyway, but the Bible never paints a scenario where divorce is a good option. So, take marriage seriously. It’s better to be miserable and faithful, than divorced and miserable. Worse, you can be happy and outside of God’s will. Maybe you’ve been divorced, ok, you can’t do anything about that now, that’s why Jesus died on the cross. We all have a past, and He doesn’t hold that against us. Serve him from this day forward and take your life seriously for Jesus.

Don’t make them stumble

“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to fall away —it would be better for him if a heavy millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea”.

Mark 9:42

Be careful how you lead others. “Oh, it’s not a big deal, just skip Church that week…” “Oh, come on, no one’s going to know, have a drink…” “I know worship is important, but we’ve got a game that day…” Be careful how you lead others, especially kids. They are watching us. The priorities you set will be clear to them. They understand how important your faith is to you, if you don’t really life for Christ, why should they? Kids don’t really listen to what you say, if that doesn’t match how you live. Don’t make light of faithfulness, they are paying attention.
