Don’t Forget

“Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” They were discussing among themselves that they did not have any bread. Aware of this, he said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact you have no bread? Don’t you understand or comprehend? Do you have hardened hearts? Do you have eyes and not see; do you have ears and not hear? And do you not remember?”

Mark 8:15-18

How easy is it to forget? Though we do start following Jesus at a particular point in time (see John 3 about being “born again”) we are not done once we make that decision. Our entire life as a Christian will need to be spent remembering what Jesus has done and reminding ourselves that he’s not finished doing it. The disciples had just seen Jesus feed 5,000 men, along with women and children. What a miracle!!! And then they were grumbling “we don’t have any bread.” What? They literally just watched what Jesus could do for thousands of people, were they worried Jesus would let 12 starve? What has Jesus done in your life. How close have you been with him in the past? Don’t you know he isn’t finished? Not only will he do it again, he can even surpass former days. Trust in him, keep going, jump back in!

Believe and Do

Abandoning the command of God, you hold on to human tradition.

Mark 7:8

Sometimes we think we will “get in good” with God by the things we do. We attend church, we give our offerings, we may even serve in some way. All of these things are excellent and a wonderful way to serve the Lord’s mission… but they don’t improve our status, rather, they reveal it. We get closer with the Lord and thus we do more, we don’t do more in order to get closer with the Lord. It’s a very subtle difference. The Pharisees didn’t understand. While it is true, you only really believe what you actually do… you can still go through the motions to do all the right things, without actually believing it in your heart. Believe and do, do because you believe. Don’t simply follow empty rituals, fill those rituals with meaning (don’t just abandon them altogether).

What Can’t God Do?

He was not able to do a miracle there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Mark 6:5-6

The only think that can stop God from doing a miracle in your life is you. “God can do anything!” we might say, and that’s true… but God won’t do anything. It’s like the line from Jurassic park when Dr. Ian Malcom said “…your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” God doesn’t fall into that trap. He never does what he shouldn’t, even if he could, he wouldn’t. He won’t fill the gap in your faith. Listen to what that scripture says, Jesus wasn’t able to do miracles there. In a sense, that indicates he wanted to, but he didn’t want to do a miracle in the presence of bold-faced unbelief even more. The only think that will stop the Lord is unbelief… believe it.

Critical Race Theory (CRT), Nazis, Christians, and You

Critical race theory has become pervasive in our culture in the last year or so. As Christians, we need to understand what it is, and that it is a destructive framework diametrically opposed to a biblical worldview. We hear a lot of rhetoric about “fascism” and comparisons to “Nazis” today, most of which are fare overblown hyperbole, however, CRT does follow the same line of thinking that lead to Hitler’s “final solution.” In this video, I share some thoughts about the Bible and CRT. Below are the 5 scriptures I reference in the video. Thanks for watching.

Deuteronomy 24:16
“Fathers are not to be put to death for their children, and children are not to be put to death for their fathers; each person will be put to death for his own sin.

Ezekiel 18:20
The person who sins is the one who will die. A son won’t suffer punishment for the father’s iniquity, and a father won’t suffer punishment for the son’s iniquity. The righteousness of the righteous person will be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked person will be on him.

Galatians 6:4-5
Let each person examine his own work, and then he can take pride in himself alone, and not compare himself with someone else.
For each person will have to carry his own load.

Romans 14:10 & 12
But you, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God… So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

2Corinthians 5:10
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may be repaid for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

Believe

“Don’t be afraid. Only believe.”

Mark 5:36

Faith and fear cannot occupy the same space, but that’s sometimes a tall order. We know that God can do anything, and that he loves us, but it is hard to release our anxiety to him. Little by little, however, it can be done. Let go of some of your fear and begin to take baby steps of trust. Pray, ask, and then go. Day by day, incrementally more, you can do it. Faith over fear.
