Chapters 1-11

 

 

• The end of the Torah/Pentateuch = “5 Books of Moses”

Deuteronomy 1:1
“These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel across the Jordan in the wilderness…”

Deuteronomy = “REPETITION of the Law”

The “Ten Commandments” = The “Ten WORDS” (Deut. 5:4-21)

#1) The first Hebrew commandment: I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD

#2) The second Hebrew commandment: You shall have no other GODS & no IDOLS

#6) You shall not MURDER (Heb. ratzach – not harag) = stealing a LIFE

#7) Adultery = stealing a WIFE

#8) Steal = KIDNAP (Heb. tignob) = a summery of #6-10

#9) Dishonest testimony against your neighbor = stealing JUSTICE

#10) You shall not covet – WANTING to steal anything

The Shema – Deut 6:4 “Hear, Oh Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord alone”

• The two operative words in The Shema: LISTEN and LOVE

• Obedience demonstrates LOVE (John 14:15)
