Most Important

When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they came together. And one of them, an expert in the law, asked a question to test him: “Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.”

Matthew 22:34-40

What’s most important? They were trying to test Jesus to see what he thought was most important. They were sure whatever he said, they could find something that would contradict him “oh yea, well what about…” But, Jesus gave the perfect answer. The entire law is summed up in loving God and loving others. You might even say it this way, love God by loving others. If you don’t love people, you aren’t loving God, because God loves people. Conversely, you might think you can love people without involving God, and you can’t. So if your “love” of someone leads you to bend God’s law, that’s not real love. Love God, love people. If you do that, you can’t break the 10 Commandments.

Fruit

Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruit.

Matthew 21:43

What fruit does your life produce for Jesus? Jesus told the Pharisees the kingdom was going to be taken away from them and given to those who would produce fruit. There’s no such thing as a fruitless Christian. The Bible is clear (Eph 2 for example) that we are not saved by our works, or what we can do, however genuine belief leads inexorably to doing something productive. If our lives aren’t any good for the kingdom, do we really believe? Let’s get to work reaching people with the gospel, teaching each other how to live as God’s word instructs us, and serving those around us, especially our fellow believers. We can do it, with the Holy Spirit, and be of some good to the kingdom. 🙂

Tend the vineyard

Don’t I have the right to do what I want with what is mine? Are you jealous because I’m generous?

Matthew 20:15

There is a temptation to look at others’ blessings and feel a sense of loss. “Why can’t I have that?” Don’t fall into that trap. Our Lord knows we’re like this, that’s why this parable exists. We already know “thou shall not covet” (Exod 20:17), but Jesus makes it more personal. Do we not trust Him? He has promised to give us all we need (Matthew 6:33), so don’t worry about what he blesses others with. Once we start down the road of the comparison game, we all lose, that’s how coveting works, it’s poison. Rather, count your blessings, as the song says. Look at what God has done for you and be thankful for his many blessings. Be faithful with how he has blessed you and he will honor that gratitude. It really is about our faith in him.

Sacred Bond

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that he who created them in the beginning made them male and female, and he also said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Matthew 19:4-6

Marriage is not a legal document. It’s more than a piece of paper. It is not a temporary situation, it really is what the traditional vows state: “for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part.” Jesus confirmed the Old Testament’s view of marriage as one man and one woman for a lifetime. The two become “one flesh” thus divorce is on the same level as killing, sometimes it has to happen, but it should be rare, it always destroys lives, and there is always at least one guilty party. Fight for marriage, your own, and the idea in general. Marriage matters.

We are all responsible for eachother

“If your brother sins against you, go tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won your brother. But if he won’t listen, take one or two others with you, so that by the testimony of two or three witnesses every fact may be established. If he doesn’t pay attention to them, tell the church. If he doesn’t pay attention even to the church, let him be like a Gentile and a tax collector to you.

Matthew 18:15-17

“What I do is between me and God…” is not how the Christian life is meant to work. Every believer is supposed to be part of the church, through a local church, who all keep each other accountable. How we act as Christians does matter to our church.
