All Is Quiet In The Tomb (3 Days)

Friday was violent, Saturday was silent… but Sunday’s coming!

Saturday April 4, AD33 (or perhaps April 8, AD30) was quiet.

Jesus hadn’t said much from the cross, he was exhausted, near death, spent.

  • Forgive them (luke 23:34)
  • Today I say to you truly, you will be with me in paradise (Luke 23:43)
  • Behold your mother (John 19:26-27)
  • My God, why have you forsaken me!? (Mark 15:34 cf. Ps 22)
  • I thirst (John 19:28)
  • Paid in full (John 19:30)

And then one final cry, the end of an agonizing, lonely six hours hanging just off the earth, but excluded from heaven:

  • “Father… Into your hands I commit my spirit (Luke 23:46)”

It was over, it was quiet, the quietest time in all history.

Good Friday – The Cross

The 7 Statements of Jesus From The Cross

Forgiveness
When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing.”
Luke 23:33-34

Salvation
Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other answered, rebuking him: “Don’t you even fear God, since you are undergoing the same punishment? We are punished justly, because we’re getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly I tell you today, you will be with me in paradise.”
Luke 23:39-43

Arrangements for His Mother
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
John 19:26-27

Lament
When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lemá sabachtháni? ” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” Mark 15:33-34 (Psalm 22)

Thirst
when Jesus knew that everything was now finished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, “I’m thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it up to his mouth.
John 19:28-29 (Psalm 69:21)

τετέλεσται
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
John 19:30

Faithful Victory
Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.” Saying this, he breathed his last.
Luke 23:46

The Reason
Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds. We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished him for the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:4-6

The Tower of Babel

Finding God in Chaos: We Can Only Be United In Christ

Genesis 10

21 To Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber… 25 To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided… 31 These are the sons of Shem, by their clans, their languages, their lands, and their nations. 32 These are the clans of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, in their nations, and from these the nations spread abroad on the earth after the flood.

Genesis 11

1 Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. 2 And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”

5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. 6 And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.

7 Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.” 8 So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth.

When We Don’t Trust The Lord:
1. We trust ourselves… alone
2. We think we can be God… fail
3. We don’t lift up God’s name… lack of purpose, empty, unfulfilled

When We Trust The Lord:
1. We join others… in the church
2. We know we need God… success
3.We worship Jesus… on mission fulfilled with purpose

Acts 2

1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
