“Enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who go through it. How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it.

Matthew 7:13-14

If you’ve found the easy way to be a Christian… you haven’t. Most people will not genuinely follow Jesus as a true believer. At the same time, most people think they’re Christians. The math doesn’t add up. Don’t let this be you. Don’t be like the people who heard Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea and just went about their lives thinking everything was ok. Don’t be like those Paul speaks of in 1Thess. 5:2-4 “the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. 3 When they say, “Peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the dark, for this day to surprise you like a thief.” Is your road easy? Are you doing basically what everyone around you is doing? Are you taking the harder road? The road that leads to life is difficult, *few* find it.

Do not pass “GO”

when you give… when you pray… when you fast

Matthew 6:3, 6, 17

Jesus’ instructions to his disciples is very practical. Often times we want to know how to have a deeper faith, to take our Christian life to the “next level.” How consistently do you give to the kingdom? How regular is your prayer life? How often do you set aside a day to not eat anything in order to focus on the Lord? These are not “next level” practices. Jesus *assumes* his disciples would do these. You cannot skip the start and move on to bigger and better things if you’re not doing the basics. You cannot “pass GO and collect $200.” Don’t expect level 2 if you’re not doing level 1. Make this year the year of consistency. Give. Pray. Fast. Jesus assumes His followers will.

Bland believers

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.

Matthew 5:13

If you add salt to food, it brings out the flavor, it’s good. If you throw salt on a path, it will keep weeds from growing, it’s good. If you pack meat in salt it won’t spoil, it’s good. Salt is one of the most valuable commodities in the ancient world. Believers are intended to be like salt. Do you make a difference for the kingdom in your circumstances? Are you different than those around you, or do you just blend in? Invite others to join you on your journey following Jesus… of course, you have to be following Him in the first place.

What do we do?

Now Jesus began to go all over Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

Matthew 4:23

What are we supposed to be doing? As a Christian, what should you be trying to accomplish? Why do you need a church? Well, that depends on what you’re trying to do. If you’re trying to do what Jesus did, you can’t do it alone. Jesus was constantly doing these three things, shouldn’t we?

Reaching People

Teaching People

Serving People

Reaching people with the gospel, the good news that Jesus came for them. Teaching them how to live in light of God’s word in their life. Serving people through practical ministry in order to lead them closer to our Lord. That’s hard to do alone, Jesus didn’t. Let’s do this together!

Fruit from the root

…every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Matthew 3:10

People are like a tube of toothpaste, when we’re squeezed, what’s inside comes out. Do you really follow Jesus? Are you really committed to Him? When life squeezes us, we find out. What really is important? How do we really set our priorities? Someone can say they love Jesus with their mouth, but if our lives don’t agree, then it’s not true. We know our root based on our fruit.
