Revelation 01

The Apocalypse In Perspective
Revelation 1:1-3

1. The book REVEALS Jesus (ἀποκάλυψις)

• It is from GOD

• Through an ANGEL

• To JOHN (the Apostle)

• For the Lord’s SERVANTS

2. We are blessed if we READ and KEEP the WORDS in this book.

3. It is about SOON and NEAR events…

• Two possible dates of writing: either BEFORE or AFTER AD70

• External evidence: Irenaeus of Lyons “Against Heresies” (Book V, Chapter 30, Section 3)

“We will not, however, incur the risk of pronouncing positively as to the name of Antichrist; for if it were necessary that his name should be distinctly revealed in the present time, it would have been announced by him who beheld the apocalyptic vision. For that/he was seen no very long time since, but almost in our day, towards the end of Domitian’s reign.”
