The Book of Zephaniah
• Zephaniah lived in the final years of the SOUTHERN Kingdom (Judah).
The same as Habakkuk, Nahum, and Jeremiah.
• In this time, King Josiah tried to restore Israel’s former glory by removing all the idols from the Temple, worshiping God properly, and getting back to the BIBLE.
• The DEATH of Josiah set Judah on a collision course with destruction.
3 Main Sections:
1. Zeph 1:1-2:3 Judgment on JERUSALEM
2. Zeph 2:4-3:8 Judgment on the NATIONS and Jerusalem
3. Zeph 3:9-20 Hope for the NATIONS & JERUSALEM
• The first section begins with a symbolic “REVERSAL” of the Genesis creation
• “Apocalyptic imagery” blends the destruction of Jerusalem with the FINAL “Day of the Lord”
• In the midst of this apocalyptic destruction, there is HOPE
