An Overview of The Bible
The Book of Amos

 

• Amos was a shepherd and a FIG tree farmer (7:14)

• Chapters 1-2 Messages to the NATIONS and to Israel

• Chapters 3-6 Poems that are a message to the people of Israel and their LEADERS

• Chapters 7-9 A series of VISIONS that depict God’s coming judgment upon Israel

CHAPTERS 1-2

• In Chapter 1 Amos creates concentric circles of INJUSTICE with Israel at the center of Tyre, Damascus, Ammnon, Moab, Edom, Judah, and Gaza.

• Chapter 2 is a poem of indictment against ISRAEL that is 3x longer than the others.

CHAPTERS 3-6

• Israel had a great calling and with it came a great RESPONSIBILITY

RIGHTEOUSNESS ṣeḏâqâ – Right equitable relationships between people despite their social differences

JUSTICE mišp̱âṭ – concrete actions taken to correct injustice and create righteousness

• The “DAY of The Lord” was coming against Israel (Amos 5:18-20)

CHAPTERS 7-9

• A series of VISIONS depicting the “Day of The Lord”

• At the very end of the book, we see that with our God there is always HOPE!
