An Overview of The Bible
The Book of Ezekiel (part two)
• Ezekiel is a PRIEST in training living in Jerusalem during the first Babylonian attack
• He sees the GLORY (ḵâḇôḏ) or “weight” of the Lord (Ezek 8:4; 10:4; 43:4) see: John 1:18
THE FIRST MAJOR SECTION (Chapters 1-11)
• God always judges unfaithfulness, but there is also always hope if you turn back to Him
• Chapters 8-11: After a year of prophesying, God gives Ezekiel a tour of the TEMPLE in Jerusalem.
• Israel’s IDOLATRY has driven God away from the Temple in Jerusalem.
THE NEXT THREE SECTIONS are pronouncements of God’s JUDGMENT on specific groups:
a. Israel (Chapters 12-24)
b. The Nations around Israel (Chapters 25-32)
c. Jerusalem itself (Chapter 33)
THE FINAL SECTION (Chapters 34-48) is all about HOPE for Israel, The Nations, and All Creation
• Chapters 12-24 is about Israel’s judgment and it’s full of poems and parables.
• There are four allegories to illustrate Israel:
a. Chapter 15: The Parable of the VINE
b. Chapter 16: The UNFAITHFUL wife
c. Chapter 17: The Two EAGLES and the Vine
d. Ezekiel 23: The Two Adulterous SISTERS
• Ezekiel is like a LAWYER bringing a case in Chapters 14, 18, and 20
• God’s GOODNESS demands He bring justice on Israel. The Exile is inevitable, they have reached the point of no return.
