An Overview of The Bible
The Song of Songs
SOS 1:1 The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s.
• Song of Songs is an 8 chapter LOVE POEM
• The primary voice is a woman who is simply called “The BELOVED”
• The male voice in the book doesn’t really fit SOLOMON (see: 1Kings 11:3)
• The dialogue goes back and forth between the woman and the man without a clear PLOT or STORYLINE.
There are two main themes:
Theme #1 Desire for each other: “SEEKING and FINDING”
Theme #2 The joy of their ATTRACTION to each other
• Several times they pause to DESCRIBE each other (SOS 4:1-5; 5:10-16; 6:4-7; 7:1-5)
• He LOVES and cherishes her and she honors and RESPECTS him (see: Eph. 5:33)
• Summary: “Love is as strong as DEATH…” (SOS 8:6; see: Malachi 2:16)
• 3 times the woman WARNS the daughters of Jerusalem: do not stir up or awaken love until the appropriate time. (SOS 2:7; 3:5; 8:4)
• Love gives life but also DESTROYS, like fire.
• Why do we love? Because we reflect the IMAGE of God within us.
