Through The Bible: Ecclesiastes

“Wednesday Service”

An Overview of The Bible
The Book of Ecclesiastes
Eccl. 1-12

• The TEACHER: Heb. qôheleṯ “one who gathers people together” i.e. to learn

• Son of DAVID: a descendant. They could be Solomon or a later relative.

• The TEACHER speaks from Eccl 1:3-12:7 (1:2 & 12:8 are a summary)

• “Absolute futility” = Heb. heḇel “vapor” or “SMOKE” used 38 times in Eccl.

• Two lessons from Ecclesiastes: (1) life is TEMPORARY (2) life is a MYSTERY

• WISDOM is heḇel (a vapor) it is not meaningless, it is an enigma and hard to grasp.

• SIX times in Ecclesiastes these things are described as the GIFT of God:
Friendship, Family, A Good Meal, and a Sunny Day

• Our only real hope is in God’s good JUDGMENT
and his promise to set things right by bringing JUSTICE into our world

• Do what the Lord says… trust Him with the rest.
