The Book of Psalms: Part 2
Psalms 3-150
BOOK ONE: Psalms 3-41
• Psalms 15 & 24: are a call to faithfulness
• Psalms 16-18: David is faithful and God elevates him
• Psalms 20-23: David is a picture of the future king
• Psalm 19: Praising God for the Torah (law)
BOOK TWO: Psalms 42-72
• Psalms 42-43: Home for a future Temple in the Messianic Kingdom
• Psalm 72: Future Reign of the King
BOOK THREE: Psalms 73-89
• Psalm 89: The promise of a messianic kingdom in spite of the exile and downfall of the line of David.
BOOK FOUR: Psalms 90-106
• Psalm 90: Moses calls upon God for mercy as He did when the people worshiped the Golden Calf
• Psalms 93-99: The Lord is the true King of the World, all of creation celebrates.
BOOK FIVE: Psalms 107-145
•God will one day send the future King to defeat evil and establish God’s Kingdom.
Book 5 Subsections:
• The Hallel or “Praise”: Psalms 113-118
• The Songs of Ascent: Psalms 120-136
• Psalms 118 & 132 = The Future Messianic Kingdom
• Between: Psalm 119 is an alphabet poem that praises the Torah (Law).
CONCLUSION: Psalms 146-150 “Hallelujah”
• In the middle: Psalm 148 “God has raised up a horn for His people” (Psalm 148:14)
• Lament: Pain, confusion, and anger about what is wrong in the world and asks God to do something
• There are a lot of these mostly in BOOKS 1-3 (Psalms 3-89)
• Praise: Praters of joy and celebration draw attention to what’s good in the world and thank God
• These are in Books 4-5 and the praises outnumber the laments
• Our prayers should shift from lament to praise and look forward to our Messiah’s return.
