An Overview of The Bible
The Book of Kings: part one
1Kings 1-11

• God’s promise about SOLOMON is also about JESUS at the same time (2Samuel 7:11-16)

• The Book of Kings is the account of the line of kings after DAVID. 

 

There are five major sections to Kings:

• Sections 1 & 5 focus on JERUSALEM

– (Sec. 1) 1Kings 1-11: The Temple’s CONSTRUCTION

– (Sec. 5) 2Kings 18-25: The Temple’s DESTRUCTION & exile to Babylon

• The middle 3 sections recount the events that lead up to the tragedy of the TEMPLE

– (Sec. 2) 1Kings 12-16: Israel is divided into TWO kingdoms

– (Sec. 3) 1Kings 17 – 2Kings 8: God sends PROPHETS to warn against corruption

– (Sec. 4) 2Kings 9-17: The road to EXILE

Section 1

• Ch.1-2: The AGING David passes the kingdom to his son Solomon

• Ch.3-4: Solomon’s high point. He asked God for WISDOM

• Ch.5-8: Solomon builds the TEMPLE for the Lord.

• Ch.9-11: As soon as Solomon finishes the temple, he makes some very bad choices which lead to the kingdom FALLING APART.

– Solomon has: 700 wives & 300 concubines

– He is not living up to Deuteronomy 17:14-20

• The next section: The division of the UNITED nation of Israel into TWO separate kingdoms.
