Samuel: part two
1Samuel 8-10
• First and Second Samuel is ONE book
• Section 1: Chapters 1-7: Samuel is a PROPHET
• Section 2: Chapters 8-31: Samuel plays a KEY role in Saul’s story
• All Israel goes to Samuel and asks for a KING like other NATIONS.
• Samuel is not happy about this, but he CONSULTS the Lord
• God acknowledges their movies are WRONG
• God gives them a TRAGIC figure: Saul
• Saul begins very WELL, full of PROMISE
• He has some character FLAWS
• The king starts out winning battles, but is eventually disqualified by DISOBEYING God
•An aging Samuel (the prophet) confronts Saul and reminds the people only a FAITHFUL king would benefit Israel.
• God is opposing PROUD Saul through the prophet Samuel. At the same time Samuel declares God will anoint a NEW KING
• David begins as the LEAST likely hero
• PROUD Saul and Goliath are both brought low as HUMBLE David is exalted, just like in Hannah’s song.
•Saul starts HUNTING David, trying to KILL him.
• David’s character is revealed when he has multiple opportunities to KILL Saul, but does not dishonor the king.
• Psalm 18, 52, 53, 57 are during this time
• Saul is a WARNING: Be honest about your character flaws and deal with your failings or God will.
• David is an EXAMPLE: Trust in the Lord and be patient for His timing.
